Air Quality Testing and

The quality of the air we breathe is as important as the food
we eat.
Air quality testing identifies a wide variety or
particles and chemicals present in the air, however specific air
quality tests have to be performed depending on what we are
looking for. Most common air quality testing is done for mold
spores and this is justified; besides house dust mold spores are
the most abundant.
The air quality test involves collection of mold spores from the air using a
suction pump and trapping cassettes or culture media dishes. This is a very sensitive
mold test, but the interpretation of results could be misleading
to non-professionals. The number of indoor
mold spores indoors has to be compared with outdoors, this is why an outdoor sample must always collected. If there are significantly more indoor spores,
the test is considered positive.
The air quality test does tell us if there is an indoor mold
problem, but it tells us neither the location of the mold nor the
cause of the problem. The mold inspector has to find the location
and cause of mold growth; if none found, the validity of the test is questionable.
Another shortcoming, Stachybotrys - the toxic black mold - spores
are very heavy and they may not appear in the air, although
present in the house.
The Usefulness of Air Quality Testing
- Air quality testing is most important in showing what is in the air we breathe
- Air quality testing can betray hidden mold colonies; when a suspected area cannot be accessed without removing finishes or structural components
- The test is also useful to establish specific indoor mold species vs. outdoor species.
- Air quality testing can show cross-contamination and mold spores movement
Air Quality Testing Fees
- Basic air quality test; one indoor one outdoor sample $350, with inspection
- Additional locations in the house add $150 per location, with inspection
Without mold inspection add $75 per visit.
A laboratory report is provided; it identifies the species of
mold present in the sample and basic information characteristic to
each mold species. The cause of a positive air quality test
including structural issues and remediation protocols can be
provided only after mold inspections.
